It's similar to Racketball except you use gloved hands. It is one of the most physical games there is. What the hell is handball and why does it get its own category in Yahoo Answers?

Seriously... look at the handball category... THERE ARE 4 QUESTIONS ABOUT IT OPEN...

How does this get its own category but the most participated sport in the USA, Bowling, does not??|||I agree. I was pretty convinced that it was just a call in soccer when you touch the ball with your forearm. I think they just made it a category to confuse us. Oh, and by the way, I completely support that bowling gets its own forum. We can replace handball with bowling. Okay, I guess it's all set.|||I can't believe they have a section for handball when they don't even have a section for gymnastics!|||http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Handball|||it is a game played indoors at a gym. usually for the better healed people. kinda like tennis with your hand.|||It's a mixture between soccer and football... IT'S SOOOO FUN!!!!|||About 18 years ago, the United States women's handball team came to our school to inform people about the sport. It has been an Olympic sport since the 1930's. If I recall correctly, it's played on a court similar to a basketball court. They can pass, dribble (no more than 3 times) what looks like a small soccer ball to try to score goals. According to the US team, it is one of the most highly attended sports in the Olympics.

What is some good tips for handball for a person who just knows the rules?

like stance, penalty shoots, lines, spikes, scoops and so on.|||There a a few basic rules one needs to know in order to play handball. These rules enhance the enjoyment of the game as well as ensuring the game is played safely.

Handball is a fast moving sport so it is a given that participants be in fairly good shape before attempting to play it. There is a lot of twisting, bending, and running involved. This said it is a game played by every age group and both genders. If injury is avoided it can be played for many years.

Handball has its variants but usually it is played in a four walled room of specific dimensions. These are called the front wall, the back wall and two side walls. They are so named because they are important in the play of the game. There is a serving line where the serving player hits or serves the ball. There is a line called the short line just in front of the front wall. When served the ball must pass behind this line in order for the serve to be legal.

On some handball courts there is even a ceiling. The ball cannot strike the ceiling or any of the other walls unless it passes the short line first and then hits the floor once. After it is served the ball cannot hit the floor more than once. If it does the server scores. If the other player returns the serve and the servers return hits the floor more than once he loses his serve. This is called an out. In other words only when serving is it possible to score points.

According to the United States Handball Association rules handball can be played by two, three, or four players. If two people play it is called singles. If it is played by three people it is called cutthroat. And if it is played by four people it is called doubles.

A handball game is won by the first player to reach 21 points. If that player wins two games he wins the match. If there is a tie the players compete in what is called a tiebreaker. The first player to reach eleven points in a tiebreaker wins the match.

The handball itself is made of rubber and is 1-7/8 inches in diameter. Make sure that a raquetball ball is not purchased by mistake. they look a lot alike. the raquetball ball is bigger than the handball and it is hollow while the handball is solid rubber.

According to the rules a handball player must wear gloves and he must wear eye protection. When hitting the ball a player can only hit it with one hand. When serving the ball the player must drop it and hit it on the first bounce. If he does not hit it it is called a fault. If he faults two times in a row he must give up his serve to the other player. This is called an out. Also if the server steps over the service line before the ball hits behind the short lie it is a fault. If there are no faults and he continues to score the play goes on until the end of the game or until there is an out.

A player must try his best to get out of the way of the ball or try not to obstruct the others players attempt to hit the ball. This is called a hinder. Also anything like sweat or a foreighn object on the floor or walls that affects the ball is called a hinder. If a player obstructs the other players view of the ball this also falls under the category of a hinder. If done on purpose this is considered poor sportsmanship and there is a penalty for it.

It is highly recommended to wear comfortable clothes. A good pair of well fitting tennis shoes are a must. A headband is also a good idea as this soaks up a lot of sweat which would otherwise affect a player's vision. A good large pair of protective athletic glasses should be worn at all times.

It is pretty simple to play this highly competitive and very popular sport. All one needs is an understanding of the rules, four walls, some gloves and glasses, and a willing opponent.|||Don't be scared to give as good as you get! Handball can get rough at times and you won't stand a chance if you don't want to be a little pushy. I'm not saying foul play but it is a contact sport. And if your in goal don't be scared of the ball but also mind your fingers with fast balls! Try and stop them with the palms of your hands. When you are defending move with your team in a curtain way rather than sticking to defending one person stick to a corridor on the court.

I'm sure there is alot more but thats what I can think of atm.|||Defence stance, you need to be low with bent knees, have your legs parallel to your attacker. How do you make a money shot in handball?

It's worth 3 points instead of the usual 1.|||this is one of the most misunderstood questions in handball. first of all, any old good scoring shot does not make it a money shot. a money shot requires specials things. in most cases, it requires an audience. friends and family should be part of it. but really the most important thing required is video evidence of the money shot. a great shot that can be viewed over and over is a money shot. they call it a money shot, because the shot is so good, it was filmed and people would spend money to see that shot.

Why do people say that the Suarez handball is not cheating?

If it isn't cheating then what do you call it?|||Cheating is when you do something and dont get penalized. The guy was a genius he wanted his team to win and he took a red card to make sure it happens if you want to blame someone for Ghana's loss tonight blame it on Gyan for missing that penalty he could have ended it then and there but he didnt and Suarez created that 50-50 chance. Like I said the guy is a genius, an example of a cheat was Thiery Henry's goal against Ireland.

The guy had a do or die attitude and he took one for the team. Brilliant football!|||Making a sacrifice.

It's not cheating if you get caught by the referee. He was caught, punished and Ghana didn't take the opportunity.

As a result of the handball, he got a red card, won't play against the Netherlands, and Ghana got a penalty kick.

Now it would be cheating if Suarez blocked and the referee didn't see and he wasn't red carded for it and no penalty kick was given.|||cheating ould of been if he handed the ball the referee saw and did nothing about it just like he went blind during all of ghanas fouls during the game

But the refree did what he was supposed to do for once gave a red card and a penalty

Those of you who say it is not cheating because he got caught, are hypocrites

If you cheated on an exam and didn't get caught, you cheated.

If you cheated on an exam and got caught, does that mean you didn't cheat?|||Of course it was cheating. He was punished appropriately and penalty awarded to Ghana which they then missed. If Ghana are rubbish at penalties, it is entirely their own fault.|||cheating= umpires who enforce the rules being hoodwinked and the correct football rules not being applied

How can a goalie have a handball in soccer?

if a teammate passes it to him... but what if its a corner kick and a defender heads a ball and he gets it, does it have to be out of the box......?|||What you are referring to - the team mate passing the ball to the goalkeeper - is known as a back-pass not handball.

A back-pass occurs when an outfield player kicks the ball straight into the keeper's arms. It is one of those little rules to keep the game interesting, much like the offfside rule stops goal-mooching.

You may notice that players tend to head the ball to the keeper to keep it out of danger, because this way, the keeper is allowed to catch the ball without foul.

If there is a corner kick and the goalie collects the ball after it leaves a member of his own team, be it via head, foot or groin, he would not be penalised for a back-pass, but recognised rightly so for what he is doing: defending his goal.

Any keeper out of the box during a corner kick that his team is defending would unlikely recieve a back-pass unless the rest of the team defended corners from the centre circle, in which case, yes he would be fouled for handball. He would most likely get a yellow card and his P45.|||Any time the goalie touches the ball with his hands outside of his crease, it is a handball.|||The only way a goalie can have a hand ball is if he catches the ball outside of the penalty box|||If he touches the ball (with his hands) anywhere outside the 6 yard box, its a handball.|||if he handels the ball outside the box or if he tries to handel the ball his team mate kicked back to him even if he is in the box if the his team mate heads the ball back he is allowed to catch or handle the ball|||if he grabs the ball out side the 18 feet line|||it's not a handball if a teammate passes it back to him- then it's called a passback.

It's a handball if the goalie touches it or picks it up outside the box.|||If the goalie handles the ball outside the penalty box its classed as handball.

Oldham Athletic had their goalkeeper sent off on Sunday for handling outside his area

In the box he can pick up a ball from a header or chest down from one of his own team but not a pass back this is to try to stop time wasting.|||if a goalie touches the ball with his hands outside the penalty box, then it's a handball.|||if a teammate passes the ball back with his feet the goalie can not pick up the ball with his hands, as years ago there was to much deley, now if his owner players uses his head or chest the ball back to the goalie he can pick it up with his hands, so to answer the question if on a corner kick your defender uses his head the goalie can pick up the ball with his hands|||Anything out of the penalty box is a handball for the goalie.|||If the goallie picks up the ball with his hands after it is kicked to him by a team mate it is a handball and is penalized with an indirect free kick from where the goallie was when he picked the ball up. However a team mate can pass back to his goallie using either his head, knee or chest.

Also, if the goallie picks up the ball outside the pennalty area ( 16 yards from goal, the outer goalbox), its a handball and penalized with a direct free kick and a yellow card.|||Outside the penalty area (18 yard box).|||High Balls - Catching Above Head

The basic position of the hands resembles the letter "W". If the hands are too small to keep thumbs together and secure the ball, then open up the thumbs to get fingers and palm to control it.

Medium High Balls - Catching Chest High

The basic position of the hands resembles an inverted "W", with the little fingers touching. The thumbs and palms put pressure on the ball while the fingers bend to form a "basket".

Medium High Balls - Catching Stomach High

The basic position of the hands resembles the chest high catch, however the hands are a bit more underneath the ball to cradle it into the stomach.

Low Balls - Catching Between Knees And Ground

Same hand position as for medium high balls. You need to drop both (or at least one) knees to the ground as you catch the ball to get body securely behind ball.

Diving - Catching While Moving Horizontally

The concept of the "W" still applies. You do want to make sure that the hand closest to ground provides a "backstop" for the ball while the other puts pressure from the top.

Where and when did the sport handball originate?

I always thought it was an Irish game, but I know it is big in Iceland too?|||Team handball has origins reaching as far back as the antiquity: urania in ancient Greece, harpaston in ancient Rome, fangballspiel in medieval Germany, etc. There are also records of handball-like games in medieval France, and among the Inuit on Greenland, in the Middle Ages. By the 19th century, there existed similar games of haandbold from Denmark, hazena in Bohemia and Slovakia, gandbol in Ukraine, torball in Germany, as well as versions in Ireland and Uruguay.

The first set of team handball rules was published on October 29, 1917 by Max Heiser, Karl Schelenz and Erich Konigh from Germany. After 1919 these rules were further improved by Karl Schelenz. The first international games were played under these rules, between Germany and Belgium for men in 1925 and Germany and Austria for women in 1930|||History of Handball

as told by Tom O'Connor

Growing up in Ireland in the 50's, there were certain facts that were perceived as being self-evident; the sun rose in the east, America was the land of opportunity and handball was an Irish invention. We grew up with stories of Fionn Mc Cool, Cuchulainn and other legendary heroes who, emerging from the Celtic twilight, would relax after their great deeds in battle and hunting by playing hurling (ariel hockey) and handball. Great was the shock in later years to hear that other countries such as Spain, France and Italy were also claiming credit as the original home of the game.

Strict historical research, rather than myth and legend, turns up few clues as to the origins of the game. The elements involved in the play ball, wall, players and rules must have evolved in many different countries at different times. The chroniclers of ancient times would have in the main been concerned with the lives of rulers and kings; leisure activities of the people would be recorded only in so far as they touched on the lives of the nobility.

The first record of ball games with the hand is from 2000 B.C. in Egypt. Their priests of the temple of Osiris in Thebes were depicted on the tombs striking the ball with the hand. Such iconographic evidence is also found in America where ball games formed an integral part of Pre-Hispanic culture. Over 700 ball court sites have been identified from Arizona to Nicaragua. Many having sculptures, bas-reliefs and painted vessels. Showing people engaged in hand-played balls. The oldest are dated as far back as 1500 B.C., and interestingly in only one area is there play involving a wall that depicts the land of the Chichimeca people of the Mexican plateau. A one-wall game is still played in the States around Zacateca, where there are over 400 courts with most of the dimensions 12m x 6m - almost 40' x 20'.

Meanwhile, back in Europe the Greek writer Homer refers to a handball game invented by Anagalla, a princess of Sparta, and describes the action in a picturesque, if not very informative way, "O'er the green mead the sporting virgins play, their shining veils unbound along the skies, tossed and retossed, the ball incessant flies." In Ireland a good server of the ball is said to have a great toss!

Alexander the Great (450 B.C.) is credited with spreading the game to the Greek colonies in Italy, and from there it went to Spain, France and to other parts of the Roman Empire. Around the year 1000 A.D., as Europe emerged from the Dark Ages, mention of handball became more numerous in manuscripts. In France Jeux de Paume (palm play) became popular with both the nobility in their enclosed courts and the ordinary people who played longe-paume on common land. The medieval annul of St. Foix written around 1300 A.D. describes the game. "The exercise consists in receiving the ball and driving it back again with the palm. The game was first played with the bare hand, then with the glove, lined or unlined; afterwards they bound cord or rattin around the hand to make the ball rebound more forcibly."

So far there is no mention in any of the sources of a rebound game against a wall, the game played was one of hand-tennis and this is still played in parts of Spain, France, Holland and Sweden. The original ball used was made of tightly rolled cloth pieces stitched together and this would have given little bounce against a wall. The game of Jeux de Paume with the addition of larger and longer gloves finally became the game of tennis. The hand versus racquet controversy was commented on by Erasmus the Dutch Philosopher in 1524, "You may sweat more but the game is prettier when played with the hand."

About this time, play with the hand against a wall is first mentioned in Scotland in 1427, when King James I paid a heavy price for his addiction to the game. He had given orders to his men to block up a cellar window that was interfering with his handball. A short time later he found that this escape route was cut off when the assassins came to murder him: "Alas in that vault a gap once was where through the King might have fled, but three days hence closed walled had it been by his will; for the ball would run therein when without at the palm he played."

Exactly 100 years later, the Town Statues of Galway of 1527 forbade the playing of ball games against the walls of the town and this is the earliest mention of rebound play in Ireland. The same laws forbade anyone with names beginning with O' or Mac to be in this English occupied town between dusk and dawn. Galway on the west coast of Ireland had many trading links with Spain especially the Basque regions where the game of Pelotamano was played and is still played extensively - it is still very much a matter of controversy as to who introduced wall handball to the other - the jury is still out.|||1950

What happens if a game ends in a tie in handball?

Are there a bunch of overtimes like football, or what?|||in a tie after the extra time the winner is determined by an individual shootout from the 7-meter line, where each team is given five shots. The rules of the shootout are similar to soccer shootouts, where, if a winner is not found within the first ten shots, the players return to the shooting, until one team has missed and the other scored.|||A standard match duration consists of two periods of 30 minutes each during which each team may call one time-out. Normal league games are usually allowed to end in a draw, but in knockout tournaments, such as the of the Olympics, two extension periods of 5 minutes are played, and if they also end in a draw another two times 5 minutes has to be played. If each of these ends in a tie after the extra time the winner is determined by an individual shootout from the 7-meter line, where each team is given five shots. The rules of the shootout are similar to soccer shootouts, where, if a winner is not found within the first ten shots, the players return to the shooting, until one team has missed and the other scored. In two Olympic Finals of women's handball penalty shootout had to be used - both of them with Denmark participating (against Hungary in 1996 and South Korea in 2004); and both of them with Denmark as the winner.

The game is quite fast and includes body contact as the defenders try to stop the attackers from approaching the goal. Only frontal contact by the defenders is allowed; when a defender stops an attacker with his or her arms instead of his or her torso, the play is stopped and restarted from the spot of the infraction or on the nine meter line, with the attacking team in possession.

The usual formations of the defense are the so-called 6-0, when all the defense players are within the 6 meter and 9 meter lines; the 5-1, when one of the players cruises outside the 9 meter perimeter, usually targeting the center forwards; and the least common 4-2 when there are two such defenders. The usual attacking formation includes two wingmen, a center-left and a center-right which usually excel at high jumps and shooting over the defenders, and two centers, one of which tends to intermingle with the defense (also known as the pivot or try line player, somewhat similar to the hole set (2 m) in water polo), disrupting the defense formation, and the other being the playmaker (similar to basketball and tennis). Also the players may use the "box plus one" defense in which the players line up in a box form and the extra player will attack the other team's player who has the ball while the others guard the goal area and try to intercept passes. The formations vary greatly from country to country. The most common formation for the central European teams as well as the Scandinavian teams is 6-0. This formation can be altered to 5-1 by placing a player--usually the far wing--in the middle in front of the 9-meter perimeter to disturb the play of the other team. The Ukrainian team "HC Motor Zaporyshe" plays a 3-3 formations with man marking all over their defensive area. This formation is used by teams outside Eastern Europe only when behind with a few goals with a few minutes left, in the attempt to steal the ball faster.

Goals are much more common in handball than in most other sports; usually, both teams score at least 20 goals each, and it is not uncommon to have a match end (say) 33-31. This was not true in the earliest days, when the scores were more akin to that of ice hockey, but as offensive play (in particular in terms of counterattacks after a failed attack from the other team) has improved, more and more goals have been scored after each match|||If a game ends in tie in handball, there will penalties ( a set of five and then 3).

If its a one on one game u gotta see who serves the ball first, if u'r serving it. then u either do it the more advanced way wen u throw the ball in the air and aim it at the wall for ur first serve or u can do it an easier way which is bounce the ball and then hit it aiming to the wall, from there it's a u hit right after your oponent hits the ball, if u throw the ball out of the line its a foul and its a point for ur opponent, or if ur opponent hits the ball to the floor its your point, the game is real simple, you serve opponent hits, u git, opponent hits, da hard part is to know were da ball is so u can hit it, you have to be real fast amd agile. good luck.

Handball?????

Version #1 Handball- This version is what most Americans think of when they hear handball and it's played in Ireland as part of the Gallic Games. Best described as racket ball without the rackets.

Handball involves two to four players (singles or doubles), a ball durable hands, and a few walls. Handball is usually played on a Court is usually 60 feet X 30 feet and 40X20 with the players striking a tiny ball against the front wall (later other walls) in the hope they will place it in a spot their opponent can't get to and deliver a point to the player who has served.

http://www.gaa.ie/page/all_about_handbal鈥?/a>

Version #2- Handball (What is also known as team handball as not to be confused with that other handball) is a fast paced game involving 2 teams of 7 players who pass, throw, catch, and dribble a small ball with their hands while trying to score goals. The team with the most goals wins the game. A game consists of two- 30 minute halves with 10- minute half time break.

Team Handball is most popular in Germany, Scandinavian counties such as Sweden, Denmark, Norway and Iceland, and into Eastern Europe such as Poland, Slovenia, Croatia Hungary, etc. Spain and France also play the sport and have pro leagues. Other then European nations game also is popular in North Africa. Really the only place in North America that it has a strong following is Greenland.

Team Handball had its 1st world championship in 1938 and has been part of every Olympics since 1972 (1976 for women).

Handball ( or "team handball") is a fast paced game involving 2 teams of 7 players who pass, throw, catch and dribble a small ball with their hands while trying to score goals. The team with the most goals wins the game. A game consists of two- 30 minute halves with a 10- minute halftime break.

The game was invented around the late 1800's and started in Sweden, Denmark, and Germany. The reason why you haven't heard much about this sport is because it's a big sport in most of EUROPE, North Africa, and South Korea.

The USA does have a handball team , but we are awful last time we qualified was Atlanta only because of a rule that gives the host nation a spot for each sport. Some colleges even have team handball as a club sport. Read this ESPN story of one women trying to make the team.

The game has a goal similar to but smaller than the one in association football, though as the name implies, the basic method of handling the ball involves the players' hands rather than their feet.|||First off, never ever ever use Wikapedia. Handball?!?

If a footballer brings his arms in front of his chest to protect himself from the ball being struck into him and the ball hits his arms/hands, is this considered as handball in the professional footballing leagues?|||It depends entirely on the referee's enterpretation, but usually, yes.

The law says that intentional handball ("hand to ball") is a foul, however, accidental handball ("ball to hand") is not. Therefore, the referee would need to judge the intention of the player.

Sometimes, a ball is kicked so hard and with such force that a player can't move his arms out of the way in time - they're not usually fouls.

In the scenario you've descibed, the chances are it would be a foul, because the player had intentionally moved his hands and changed the flight of the ball. There is precedent to this: Stuart Pearce against Switzerland in the Euro 96 Championship put his hands in front of his face to protect it from the ball - this was deemed a foul and the referee gave a penalty (because it was in the area).

It's a contentious area of football, but it will always boil down to the referee's interpretation of the intent.

I hope that helps.|||It is up to the referee to decide. The rule basically used is did the ball hit hand or did the hand hit ball? But referees are human and would not all agree, so there is an element of chance involved in such an occurence.|||If you deliberately move your hand towards the flight of the ball, for whatever reason, it is likely to be given as handball.|||I don't think we see enough hand-balls in the modern game myself. I would rather see a slight intervention from the opposition, than a mis-timed bone crunching tackle.|||If the ball hits your hand whilst you are scratching your chest then no, if you raise your hand to deflect the ball elsewhere then yes. If you are standing with your arms at your side and the ball hits them no.

In other words it has to be a deliberate handball or a case where you gained an advantage by the ball hitting your hand/arm. Common sense should normally prevail.|||Well,tough call,it's up to the ref.If he counts it as handball,then he's probably thinking why the player didn't chest the ball.If he dosen't give it,then he's thinking the player's instincts kicked in,it can't be helped.There's one example when Man Utd played Boro at the Riverside in the FA Cup,Ronaldo kicked the ball and it was going to the top of Boateng's head,he raised both his arms to deflect the shot and the ref gave a penalty.I knew that was handball but I was thinking if he did that to protect his head.|||It depends on how the referee deems it;

Hand to ball - The ball was blocked by the player intentionally.

Ball to hand - The player could not avoid being struck by the ball.

Players don`t tend to protect their chests, usually just their groin area.

Can anyone explain the difference between the cheat of Henry (handball) vs Suarez's Hand of the Devil?

both were deliberate handballs to win their respective matches.|||Yup, it's easy...

Henry used to GIFT a goal to France, Suarez used to GIFT a place in the SF for Uruguay.. lol..

Seriously, Henry used it to pass the ball to Gallas who later scored it, Henry was a rogue and a cheat for the WHOLE WORLD and Suarez blocked the ball with his hand, and is hated by well, the world except his contrymen who think he's a national hero..:(:(|||How is one a cheat and the other a hero?

I think its the British media being Francophobic and the American media being anti-France. The truth is, Thierry Henry gave the English-speaking world the perfect opportunity to stab France in the back, and call them the 'cheating Frogs' or whatever.

Because honestly, you would be a fool to think Henry's handball was worse than Suarez's, even if it did go unpunished.

Which do you think is worse? Two taps on the ball with one hand and then crossing the ball on the 100th minute, or blocking a certain goal with both hands in the 120th minute?

I'm not an Henry fan, but I just think what he got was unjust compared to what the media have branded Suarez's heroic handball. Also, Luis Fabiano handballed twice that led to him scoring a goal himself against the Ivory Coast. It was a similar thing to Henry, but nobody talked about Fabiano, which makes me think that Henry copped it simply because he was French.|||neither have been put up on a Pedestal as a hero they've just been handled (no pun intended) differently

How about that Handball from Luis Suarez of Uruguay that is insane that they still won, insane or what!!?

I was hoping Ghana would make it, but that handball had to take it all. Luis Suarez is probably a hero in Uruguay right now. WOW great game.|||it was the best game of football i have ever seen, tense right to the end, i hate people that say ghana were the better team, if they were the better team theyt would have won the game, gyan couldnt score in the br0thel, now that suarez is out for 1 match the biggest threat is forlan, their chance is just as good as any other teams to win the world cup, especially being the last south american team left, all of south america will be going for uruguay!!|||to be honest it depends on which team you are a fan of. I really wanted Ghana to win because they were the better team in my opinion and they deserved it. So if you look at the handball through Ghana's point of view they must be so pissed off that Suarez ruined the moment that would make their whole continent happy. But if you are on Uruguay's side the he probably is a hero because he did what he had to do to make sure that Ghana doesn't get a goal and he did get a red card because of that. Anyways I think that it was an exciting game and I definitely enjoyed it. But I really wish that Ghana had won instead of Uruguay.|||I'm sure the people of uruguay are split as well. What are the rules for handball penalties?

We need to be standing on our pivot foot. What else?|||Play

American handball is played on a court 40 feet (12.2 m) long by 20 feet (6.1 m) wide with either a single (front) wall, three walls, or in a fully enclosed four-wall court (the most common). The four-wall court is a rectangular box. The front wall is 20 feet (6.1 m) square, and the side walls are 40 feet (12.2 m) long and 20 feet (6.1 m) high. In the middle of the floor of the court lies the short line, dividing the floor into two 20 feet (6.1 m) squares. Also along the floor is the service line, which is 5 feet (1.5 m) in front of the short line. The service zone is the area between these two lines. The back wall of the court is usually 12 feet (3.7 m) high, with an above gallery for the referee and scorer, and also spectators. A few courts have a glass back wall and/or glass side walls to allow for a better view of the match. (In three-wall court handball, the court often has a front wall and two full side walls, or the front wall is flanked by two triangular wings.)

Handball may be played as singles (two players against each other), doubles (two teams of two players), or "cut-throat" (three players rotating one-against-two). (In "cut-throat" handball, one server plays against two receivers, until he or she is put out. Then, the left-most receiver serves, and so serves rotate in this way until one player scores 21 points and wins.) The "cut-throat" mode of play is also known as "triangles".

The ball is "served" by one player/team standing in the service zone, by dropping the ball to the floor of the service zone and striking it on the bounce with the hand or fist so that it hits the front wall. The ball must hit the front wall first; it may then hit at most one side wall; the served ball must pass the short line before the first bounce, but must bounce before reaching the back wall. When the served ball lands in front of the short line, it is called a "short," while a serve which reaches the back wall without bouncing is called "long," and a serve which hits both side walls before bouncing is called a "3-wall". All these are service faults. If the server gets two faults in a row, he or she is out, and becomes the receiver. If a serve hits the ceiling, floor, or a side wall before hitting the front wall, the server is out (no second serve allowed). In doubles, the server's teammate has to stand in the service area with his/her back to a side wall in a service box, marked by a parallel line 18 inches (46 cm) from the side wall, until the ball passes the short line.

The receiver must stand at least 5 feet (1.5 m) behind the short line, indicated by dashed lines extending 6 inches (15 cm) from each side wall, while the server has the ball. Once the ball is served, he or she must hit the ball either directly ("on the fly") or after the first bounce so that it bounces off the front wall. However, if the receiver chooses to take the serve on the fly, he or she must first wait for the ball to cross the dashed line. The ball must not bounce off the floor twice. Nor can any player during a return hit the ball off the floor before it touches the front wall. The server then hits the ball on the rebound from the front wall, and play continues with the opponents alternatively hitting the ball until one of them fails to make a legal return. After the serve and return, the ball may be played from anywhere, and may hit any number of walls and/or the ceiling, so long as it hits the front wall before bouncing on the floor. Players cannot hinder (block) their opponents from hitting the ball. If the server fails to make a legal return, he or she is out, and becomes the receiver. If the receiver fails to make the return, a point goes to the server, who continues to serve until he or she is out. So, only the server/serving team can score points. The game goes to the player/team to score 21 points first, and a match goes to the player/team to win two out of three games; the third game goes to 11 points.

[edit] Three-wall

A three wall handball court is an outside court with a front, 2 sides, and no back wall. It is played very much like an indoor four-wall court, with the same rules, only with the challenge of returning the ball without any backwall rebound.

Toledo, Ohio is the home of the Annual U.S.H.A. National Three-Wall Championships.

[edit] One-wall

A one-wall handball court has a wall 20 feet (6.1 m) wide and 16 feet (4.9 m) high. The court floor is 20 feet (6.1 m) wide and 34 feet (10.4 m) long. When not played as part of tournament or league play, the one-wall game typically uses the bigger ball called "the Big Blue" (described in the next section "Equipment"). The main difference between one-wall handball and other versions is that the ball must always be played off the front wall. One-wall handball can be watched by more people than a four-wall game. The court is also cheaper to build, making this version of handball popular at gymnasiums and playgrounds. In New York City alone, it is esti|||hjmgjhmjhmjhhj|||god.... get a life.....

What are the rules to balomano (aka) handball?

I was watching handball during the olympics with my dad and we were amazed at their skills but were hazy on the actual rules.|||The Playing Court: The court measures 20 meters (65' 7") by 40 meters (131' 3"). The court is larger than a basketball court, but the length may be shortened when space is limited. The goal area line, or 6-meter line (19' 8"), is the most important line. No one except the goalie is allowed to stand in the goal area. The goal opening is 2 meters by 3 meters. Players may jump into the area if the ball is released before landing in the area.

The Ball: Team handball is played with a 32-panel leather ball. For women, the ball is 54 to 56 centimeters and 325 to 400 grams. For men, it is 58 to 60 centimeters and 425 to 475 grams.

Number of Players: There are seven players on each team (six court players and one goalie). A maximum of 12 players may dress and participate in a game for each team. Substitutes may enter the game at any time through own substitution area as long as the player they are replacing has left the court.

Uniform of the Players: Player numbers are 1 to 20. Uniform shirts and shorts are the same color. The goalkeeper must wear a different color shirt from teammates and opponents. No jewelry is allowed.

Referees: There are two referees, a court referee and a goal line referee. Referees have complete authority: Their decisions are final. The referees are assisted by a timer and a scorer.

Duration of the Game: For players 18 years and over, the game consists of 2, 30-minute halves with 10-minute half-time. For tournament and youth games 2, 15-minute or 2, 20- minute halves. This is running time except for injury or one team time-out per half. The teams change benches at half-time. The game ends in a tie unless the game demands a winner. (Tournament rules dictate that a winner must be determined.) Overtime consists of 2, 5-minute periods).

Passive Play: It is illegal to keep the ball in a team's possession without making a recognizable attempt to attack and to try to score. In other words, a team cannot stall (free-throw awarded to the other team).

Throw-Off: A throw-off is taken by the team that wins the coin toss and chooses to start the game with the ball. Each team must be in its own half of the court with the defense 3 meters away from the ball. Following a whistle, the ball is passed from center court to a teammate and play begins. Throw-off is repeated after every goal scored and after half-time.

Scoring: A goal is scored when the entire ball crosses the goal line inside the goal. A goal may be scored from any throw (free-throw, throw-in, throw-off, goal-throw).

Playing The Ball

A player is allowed . . . -To run with the ball for 3 steps -To hold the ball for 3 seconds -Unlimited dribble with 3 steps allowed before and after dribbling (no double-dribble).

A player is NOT allowed . . .

To endanger an opponent with the ball.

To pull, hit or punch the ball out of the hands of an opponent.

To contact the ball below the knee.

To dive on the floor for a rolling or stationary ball.

Defending the Opponent: A player is allowed to use the torso of the body to obstruct an opponent with or without the ball. However, using the outstretched arms or legs to obstruct, push, hold, trip or hit is NOT allowed. The attacking player is not allowed to charge into a defensive player.

Throw-In: A throw-in is awarded when ball goes out of bounds on the sideline or when the ball is last touched by a defensive player (excluding the goalie) and goes out of bounds over the endline. The throw-in is taken from the spot where the ball crossed the sideline, or if it crossed the endline, from the nearest corner. The thrower must place one foot on the sideline to execute the throw. All opposing players must stay 3 meters away from the ball.

Referee Throw: A referee throw is awarded when . . . The ball touches anything above the court after a simultaneous infringement of the rules after simultaneous possession of the ball.

The Referee throws the ball vertically between two opposing players. The jumping players may grab the ball or tap it to a teammate. All other players must be 3 meters away from the throw. The referee throw is always taken at center court.

Free-Throw: For a minor foul or violation, a free-throw is awarded to the opponent at the exact spot it took place. If the foul or violation occurs between the goal area line and the 9-meter line, the throw is taken from the nearest post outside the 9-meter line. The thrower must keep one foot in contact with the floor, then pass or shoot.

7-Meter Throw: The 7-meter throw is awarded when . . .

A foul destroys a clear chance to score

The goalie carries the ball back into his or her own goal area

A court player intentionally plays the ball to his or her own goalie in the goal area and the goalie touches the ball

A defensive player enters his or her goal area to gain an advantage over an attacking player in possession of the ball.

All players must be outside the free-throw line when the throw is taken. The player taking the throw has 3 seconds to shoot after referee's whistle. Any player may take the 7-meter throw.

Goal-Throw: A goal-throw is awarded when . . . The ball rebounds off the goalkeeper over the endline The ball is thrown over the endline by the attacking team.

The goalie takes the throw inside the goal area and is not restricted by the 3-step/3-second rule.

Progressive Punishments

Progressive Punishments: Pertain to fouls that require more punishment than just a free-throw. "Actions" directed mainly at the opponent and not the ball (such as reaching around, holding, pushing, hitting, tripping and jumping into an opponent) are to be punished progressively.

Warnings (yellow card): The referee gives only one warning to a player for rule violations and a total of three to a team. Exceeding these limits results in 2-minute suspensions thereafter. Warnings are not required prior to giving out a 2-minute suspension. 2-minute suspensions awarded for . . . -Serious or repeated rules violations -Unsportsmanlike conduct -Illegal substitution. -The suspended player's team plays short for 2 minutes.

Disqualification and Exclusion (red card): A disqualification is the equivalent of three, 2-minute suspensions. A disqualified player must leave court and bench, but the team can replace player after the 2-minute suspension expires. An exclusion is given for assault. The excluded player's team continues short one player for the rest of the game.

What is handball and where did it originate?

my daughter is doing handball in gym and needs to know this.|||It originated in Germany.3 people are credited with inventing it:Karl Schelenz, Max Heiser and Erich Konig. Originally handball was played in 11 and on soccer pitches. However, now the only team handball internationally recognized is 7-a-side. In 1976, the IHF ended all recognition given to 11-a-side national competitions (international competitions had ceased since 1961). Team handball is generally played indoors (though in this case IHF is more lenient and makes allowance for situations in developing countries, where it might be difficult to build a sports hall or gym).

So the only team handball you could refer to now is 7-a-side. Although this too originated in Germany, it was first codified(ie given written rules) in what is now the Czech Republic. It is an Olympic sport (since 1972 for men, since 1976 for women) (11-a-side handball was an Olympic sport in 1936) and it is very popular in Scandinavia, East, Central and Southern Europe, the Far East, North Africa and expanding into South America. Beach handball has appeaared recently and is dominated by the South Americans.

Personally I think your daughter should go for it. Too many players? Make more teams. You can download the rules from www.ihf.info

I think it's the best game in the world. All the best to you!|||Which types of handball are you talking about? There are two types of handball. One is when you play in a team with seven people and the other type of handball is play with a wall and a small rubber ball, which is not an international sport. I know that the handball play with the wall and the rubber ball comes from Ireland, but I don't know the other.|||OMG I LOVE HANDBALL..

What are yellow and red cards given for in Handball?

Someone told me they use penalty cards like in soccer, what do you have to do to get them?|||Penalties are given to players, in progressive format, if the contact between the players is particularly rough (even if it is indeed frontal) the referees may award a nine-meter free throw to the attacking team, or if the infraction was during a clear scoring opportunity, a seven-meter penalty shot is given. In more extreme cases they give the defender a yellow card (warning), a 2-minute penalty, or a red card (disqualification). For rough fouls they can also order two-minute expulsions or a red card without having to warn the player. A player who is disqualified may be substituted with another player after two minutes. If a player assaults a referee, an opponent or any other person severely and deliberately, the referee can expel the player forming a cross over his head with his arms, which will tell the player that he/she will have to leave the game completely and can't be substituted for the rest of the game. An expulsion results in a quarantine for the player shown out. Disqualifications may also lead to a quarantine for the respective player. A team can only get three warnings (yellow cards); after that they will only be able to be penalized with 2-minute suspensions. One player can only get three 2-minute suspensions; after that he/she will be shown the red card, and cannot participate in that game anymore. A red card from three 2-minute suspensions does not result in a quarantine. A Coach/Official can also be penalized progressively. After a yellow card and a 2-minute suspension, the red card is shown straight out, and unlike players, coaches cannot be shown a complete expulsion, but of course also be given a match quarantine. When shown a 2-minute suspension a coach will have to pull out one of his players for two minutes - note: the player is not the one punished and can be substituted in again, because the main penalty is the team playing with a man less than the other.|||They're given for wasting your time playing a stupid game.|||yellow =foul charging-------%26gt;2 x yellow= 2min out --------%26gt;red = = out 2min----%26gt;red out for the rest of the game and not replaced

How can i get better in handball?

I wanna get better at playing handball. is there a way i can get better at aiming and hitting the ball? i often miss the ball idk why. if i do push ups will it help with me powering the ball?|||Just practice any chance you get|||just keep playing games. Play with better people. Watch how people swing and keep your eye on the ball. Working out like push ups will help keep your arms and body in shape when you play. A problem some new players have is when they play they don't warm up and hurt their shoulder or arm playing handball because it isn't conditioned correctly and on occasion you'll flail/whip your arm.|||if u play more u'll get more used to it, and I'm pretty sure u don't need to do push ups, i think u'll get more stronger the more you play|||play more and ull get more used to aiming, and hitting the handball gets u stronger. play w/ people better than u to get better|||practice....

How many teams qualify for Olympics in Handball?

Each continent seems to hold their own qualifier - how many teams per continent makes it to the Olympics? And what is the system that they use to determine the teams? Wild cards? Runner-up's?|||12 Teams Qualify for the Olympics Handball tournament (12 Men's teams and 12 Women's teams)

That leaves 10 spots for qualifying.

Asia-South Korea

Europe-Denmark

Pan-America-Brazil

What about the remaining 6 spots? IHF will hold 3 qualifying tournaments with 4 teams participating in each one. The 1st and second place team from each qualifier get a place in the Olympics.

Africa, Asia, Europe, and Pan-America each get a spot based on the runner up in their respective qualifier.

Next 6 teams from the World Championships based on finishing 2-7. Remaining 2 spots go to teams from best Continent based on World Championships. European teams would get those 2 remaining spots as they are the strongest Continent.

What is the team handball salary in the usa?

how much does a professional team handball player make in the U.S?

i'm playing handball and i want to come to the America to play handball.|||I strongly advise against trying to make a career playing team handball in the USA as you would make $0 since there's not a pro league. There are some amateur club teams probably in cities where immigrants came from countries where team handball is a bigger sport.

In fact the last time the USA had handball teams in the Olympics was Atlanta 1996 and that was only because the host country is allowed a team in every sport.|||Handball players, in the U.S, dont make a salary because handball is not a professional league in the "State."

Can handball ever become an Olympic sport?

i play handball (1-wall handball) and i was wondering, can it ever become an olympic sport? im sure lots of people out there play it. i live in nyc and its extremely popular here. i play for a team and there are competitions among schools and tournaments during the summer for handball here.

i just feel that the game i love to play deserves more recognition, and hoping it can someday become an olympic sport.|||Its not a very Popular sport but if handball can get really big players who are amazing handball players who Knows|||The skill level and the game probably deserve it; however, it would be difficult to follow on TV although they used to show raquetball. I would doubt it would become an Olympic sport due to the fact that it isn't played as universally as some others. If they put it to a vote; I'd vote for it. It's a great game for stamina, skill and tactic.|||If your talking about the version of Handball where you hit a ball of the wall with your hand no. Reason is this version of handball is just not played in enough countries around the world. Handball is apart of the Gaelic games over in Ireland and mention is made of how Irish immigrants brought the game to USA, Canada and Australia.

Handling the ball is deemed to be deliberate if the referee believes that the player attempted to control the ball with the hand or any part of the arm ("hand-to-ball"). If the ball strikes the hand or arm of a player inadvertently then it is not deemed an offense ("ball-to-hand").

What muscle group should I work out for handball?

What muscle group should I be working out to increase my swing speed?|||Triceps and pectorals. If you look at the action involved the swinging of the arm forward is the pectoral muscles and the pulling of the upper arm back to get into position is the triceps. You can tell this from where you ache after playing. Biceps are less important.

High skill (through practice) and low power is more effective than brute force however...|||biceps and triceps|||well it is really limitless but in my opinion its all about the reflects and skill you must master. you must also be very quick in speed. as far as working out definately work on your forearms and legs. you should also work on your lower and upper back to have a really nice swing. remember tho skill is key in the game of handball . those killers and rollers are priceless whether ur in shape or not once you master these your good to go buddy|||your biceps duh|||It's funny how no one mentioned abs. Do any Americans play professional team handball?

I'm in the Balkans and I've seen the team handball world cup (or whatever it's called) on tv. I was wondering if any Americans play in any of the pro leagues found throughout europe. I checked the usa team handball site but it wasn't working.|||Considering that American team handball is full of part time players and athletes from other sports I am going to say very few if any. I read that a couple of the American women play over in Europe couldn't say who or what level. Getting back to the men they play on amateur club teams either private or at a university. Trust me there are not many team handball clubs in the states.

Also American Handball has some real serious problems the last couple of years and had to disband the men's team and the old national federation. It was only in the last couple of months a new Federation was created at the request of the US Olympic committee.

USA team handball says they want to build a program with goal of promoting the sport in the USA at all levels. This includes a national team that can compete at the international level. So if a men's team ever gets up and running they could possibly try to get nationalized players they have played in Europe.|||Like I said I doubt hardly any if none at all when it comes to the men. Practice fast passing. Get 5 people in a circle, and start passing on ball to the person 2 to the left of you. add up to 4 ball, and pass as fast as you can.

For shooting remember that you can't step into the crease, but if you jump into the crease and shoot while in the air, thats allowed.
