Each continent seems to hold their own qualifier - how many teams per continent makes it to the Olympics? And what is the system that they use to determine the teams? Wild cards? Runner-up's?|||12 Teams Qualify for the Olympics Handball tournament (12 Men's teams and 12 Women's teams)
As the host nation China automatically qualifies. Germany qualified based on the fact they won the 2007 World Championships.
That leaves 10 spots for qualifying.
- 1 team the winner from each continental qualifier makes the Olympics.

Pan-America-Brazil
What about the remaining 6 spots? IHF will hold 3 qualifying tournaments with 4 teams participating in each one. The 1st and second place team from each qualifier get a place in the Olympics.
Africa, Asia, Europe, and Pan-America each get a spot based on the runner up in their respective qualifier.
Next 6 teams from the World Championships based on finishing 2-7. Remaining 2 spots go to teams from best Continent based on World Championships. European teams would get those 2 remaining spots as they are the strongest Continent.

12 women|||Handball at the 2004 Summer Olympics had a men's and a women's team competitions with the preliminary rounds taking place in the Sports Pavilion at the Faliro Coastal Zone Olympic Complex. From the quarter final stage onwards the women's event moved to the Indoor Arena of the Helliniko Olympic Complex with the men joining them there for their semi-finals and final.
The men's Handball event first made an appearance, played outside, at the 1936 Summer Olympics in Berlin, Germany but did not then re-appear until the Games returned to Germany for the Munich Olympics in 1972 since when it has been ever present. The women's game debuted in Montreal, Canada at the 1976 Summer Olympics and again has been ever present since.
